Having got up at half 4 in the morning, got our kit ready and driven the long way to Oban because I forgot which way to go, It was good to finally get to the falls at around half ten.
The falls themselves are a tidal race which forms the best play wave in Britain when the tides are big enough. For the two days we were there the tidal difference was 3.8m however on the first day the high tide was higher which resulted in a better wave.
The main wave took a while to get going however once it came in it produced a good steep shoulder over to the left with a large foam pile in the centre.
Although there was a strong wind there was a fair few people there and the sun was out making for a excellent day of surfing and flat spinning on the waves. The whirlpools were not that bad although I had a few brief spins in them.
When the Forever wave came in it came in really well, even breaking for a while when it was at its best. I jumped on it in Murray’s Pyranha S6 and sat for a good 5 minuets without putting a single stroke in.
By the end of the day I was exhausted.
We spent the evening relaxing in my house in Oban and because I had said I was going to I went to the falls for the night time session. No one else showed up but I decided to jump on anyway.
I had one run down without surfing anything and got a kicking in the third hole which was rather huge and was far to scared to go back on with no one else there so I went home with my tail between my legs.
On Friday morning after a breakfast of bacon and egg sandwiches we headed back to the falls. The weather was nicer and the wind less however the wave took ages to come in at all and did not work anywhere as well as the day before. I still had a great time, trying a few blunts with little success. The forever wave came in to some extent however none of the waves lasted for very long. I tried ciaran’s boat the Liquid Logic Ronan which was fast and boxy however I found the edges on it hard to control. The whirlpools were much bigger than the day before and I found myself at one point taking a fairly deep ride in one of them.
When the falls finally finished we headed back up the road to Aberdeen fuelled by relentless and honey roast peanuts.
Overall it was a very good trip and it was good to get back out on the falls.
Hopefully we will have a video of the trip fairly shortly and I will add this in as and when it is finnished.
